Early in the morning last week, I made a cup of coffee and opened this up:
After having a quick listen and scrolling through the tracks I realized that other than strumming my guitar here and there, I haven’t touched anything music-wise since around this time last year.
This piece is a basic, four on the floor bit I laid down around the tail end of 2022. It was longer and had more bits and pieces and I think part of the reason I put it aside was because I tried to make it more complicated that it needed to be.
That morning I deleted around ten tracks of layered guitars and other such nonsense and edited what was left down to a crisp, two minutes of drums and bass, and a single synth track because I liked it and hoped I could make use of it.
Anyway, I’m getting away from the fucking point here which is: Other than strumming my guitar here and there, I haven’t touched anything music-wise since around this time last year.
Things just get away from me. Life has been crazy. Work has been majorly crazy. All the normal excuses.
Whatever, let’s just get back into it.
I’ve spent time playing with this piece and turns out I really liked the synth part (which is nothing more than a preset in SurgeXT) and doubled it with heavily effected guitar. Added some high gain chords to what’s going to be the chorus. Exported the stems, imported them into Mixbus, and it’s sounding pretty decent.
Lyrics are 99%. Just cleaning up some phrasing I’m not happy with.
It’s the first thing I’ve worked on since downsizing and moving the office upstairs and, goddamn, it feels good.
