Signals were absolute, so I kept myself mute
It was all I could do through the smoke and the fire
When the canon’s rewrote, I won’t hang here and gloat
It’s rude and, besides, they don’t like my attire
I was feeling a way so I took a day
While everyone else calibrates and
swallows most of the words
and wipes the rest off of their chin
They say that it hurts
but you can tell by their grin …
… that…
They’re in for a penny. They’re in for a pound
They’ll just hammer those cliches right into the ground
I never would dance to a charlatan’s trance
The steps are convoluted so I passed on the chance
And settled down
Floating just below the waves
I’ll never drown
because I hold the hand that saves
Believe what you want but it’s easy to fall
I know – I’ve stood on that edge and looked down
I kinda liked what I saw so I pleaded for more
I’d no intentions of being let down
One step’s all it takes to focus your life
to a single pixel of flickering white
The right thing to do was push back through the mob and scream:
SO LONG!!
THANK YOU!!
GOOD NIGHT!!
And now here we are,
battle tested but unscarred
We watch from afar
as they let down their guard and
appear to relax, so that we turn our backs
and they laugh … AS THEY UNSHEATHE THE BLADES
